Low body mass index (BMI) was defined as < 21 kg/m2. In participants diagnosed with osteoporosis, 20.7% had a low BMI compared with 9.8% in the non-osteoporotic sub-cohort (P < 0.05, Wilcoxon); 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 serum levels < 13 ng/ml were observed in 3.8% of subjects in the osteoporotic sub-cohort compared with 15.8% in those with no diagnosis of osteoporosis
