The consequences of ageing can often result in the diagnosis of multiple chronic conditions, also known as multimorbidity leading to prescribing multiple medications (polypharmacy). Recently, it has been distinguished that sometimes polypharmacy is appropriate but most often, especially in older age, a medication that was at one point needed may become less needed or unsafe. It is estimated that more than 50% of older people are prescribed at least one medication with more harm than benefit. Inappropriate polypharmacy is associated with significant poor health outcomes such as injurious falls, cognitive impairment, hospitalization, and death, and can lead to wasteful healthcare expenditure.
Supported by a cultural change movement, a fundamental shift in thinking about long-term care environments has emerged. Long-term care environments may include the home, the community, assisted living facilities, care homes or any facility where people receive long-term care. While long-term care may be needed by people of any age, it is much more commonly required for older people who are increasingly living with complex conditions.
With the number of older persons projected to double to 1.5 billion individuals by the year 2050, population aging has become a burgeoning global phenomenon. With frailty demanding further understanding of its epidemiological characteristics and course, advancements in frailty research are imperative for better understanding of how to diagnose, reduce and mediate the drastic impact frailty has on aging populations.
The topic of aging has attracted a significant volume of research throughout the years, inspiring studies across all disciplines. To embrace the advance of aging research, we announce a cross journal collection themed Nutrition, Physical Activity and Aging. The collection is calling for papers investigating major areas of aging, nutrition and physical activity, and welcomes population-level, clinical as well as cellular aging research.
