  1. 1Men and women aged 50 years and older with hip fracture in Norway 1999–2016. The Norwegian Epidemiologic Osteoporosis Studies (NOREPOS). Causes of death are grouped according to the European Shortlist for Causes of Death 2012 [17]
  2. 2Predicted at mean age at hip fracture (78.7 years in men and 81.6 years in women) from a logistic model (general linear model with 'family = binomial' and 'link = logit') regressing cause-specific death on age separately for men and women
  3. 3The category “Other causes” includes deaths within the following categories that each contributed less than 3% of total one-year deaths: Diseases of the digestive system; Diseases of the genitourinary system; Endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases; Infectious and parasitic diseases; Diseases of the musculoskeletal system/connective tissue; Diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue; Diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs and certain disorders involving the immune mechanism; Congenital malformations and chromosomal abnormalities; Symptoms, signs, ill-defined causes; Missing cause of death (two individuals only)
